Senjyu, Bangsar Village 2, Kuala Lumpur

'I have a Groupon voucher for Senjyu, shall we use it tonight?’

'Awesome! That sounds like a great idea. I am craving for Japanese food.’

For starters, Mien had Chawanmushi, steamed egg custard (RM8).

Mien: One of the better chawanmushi I have tasted, I enjoyed it.

The rest of us decided to proceed with the main dishes. The first dish we had was Salmon Belly (RM22).

Gaj: The salmon belly was very fresh, tasty and I would order seconds.

Kav: Did not have the pungent salmon taste that I like, was rather bland, not sure if it was a lack of freshness or if it was just the type of salmon used.

Shiv: Very fresh, and there was a generous portion of sashimi. Loved it!

Mien: Fresh!

The first maki we had was Senjyu Dragon Maki , king prawn, avocado, Japanese cucumber and flying fish roe (RM24).

Gaj: The dragon maki was amazing – the avocado and prawn was a good combination.

Kav: Super awesome! The creaminess of the avocado and crunchiness of the prawn was a delicious combination.

Shiv: The best maki of the night. It was crunchy-savoury-goodness.

Next up, we had Premium Ura Maki, salmon, fried salmon and salmon roe (RM22)

Gaj: I generally love salmon maki, and this did not fail. I could not get enough!

Kav: Liked this maki a lot. However, the salmon still lacked flavour.

Shiv: A must try for all salmon lovers. It was fresh and was flavoured just right.

The third and final maki we had was Soft Shell Crab and Unagi Mentai Maki, soft shell crab with premium river eel with codfish roe (RM28).

Gaj: I did not enjoy this maki as the soft shell crab had a rancid taste to it and the eel was slightly sweet.

Kav: Liked the soft shell crab maki, but there was an oily after taste. The unagi maki was exquisite and there was a unique taste to this maki.

Shiv: I liked the unagi maki as the eel used was truly of premium quality. However, hated the soft shell crab maki, as the crab was fried in overused oil.

The next dish we had was Unagi Kabayaki, premium river eel grilled with teriyaki sauce (RM40).

Gaj: I generally do not like eel, but enjoyed this dish. The teriyaki sauce was not too sweet that it spoilt the dish.

Kav: Hands down the best dish of the night! The unagi was silky smooth and melted in your mouth. It was so fresh and sweet. Perfection!!!

Shiv: Melt in your mouth perfection! The best unagi I have ever tasted. It was so very fresh and a definite must try if you are at Senjyu.

Being temaki addicts, we each had one. Gaj and Shiv had Lobster Salad (RM10), and Kav had Jyo Unagi, premium river eel (RM10).

Gaj: I did not enjoy the Lobster Salad temaki as it was too sweet.

Kav: Due to my high expectations of the unagi here, I anticipated a mouthwatering hand roll. However, the unagi used in this roll was rubbery and nowhere close to fulfilling my expectations.

Shiv: Absolute crap! The lobster salad was too sweet and masked the other flavours of the roll.

We then had Gindara Saikyoyaki, cod fish grilled with saikyo miso sauce (RM30).

Gaj: The cod was very fresh, but the miso sauce was too sweet and spoilt it for me.

Kav: It was not time for dessert yet, however, it felt that way when eating this dish. The sweetness of the sauce overwhelmed the entire dish, but cod was extremely fresh and oily and the skin crisped to perfection.

Shiv: Appreciated the freshness of the cod, but the overly sweet sauce made this a huge disappointment.

Mien: The cod was fresh, however, the sauce had a funky taste to it.

Garlic Fried Rice was an additional side that we had to accompany the other dishes (RM7).

Gaj:  The garlic fried rice was quite tasty and it complimented the other dishes well.

Kav: Although it lacked salt, the fried rice was flavoured to perfection as the rice was fragrant with garlic and egg. I decided to have it with the unagi kabayaki, it truly tasted like paradise.

Shiv: Tasty, but could have been more savoury.

Mien had Zaru Soba, cold buckwheat noodles (RM14).

Mien: Tasted like any other zaru soba, however, the soba itself tasted starchy.

Last but not least, Gaj had Goma ice –cream (RM10).

Gaj: The Goma ice cream was alright, not the best, but definitely not bad.

Verdict : WOK ON!

PRICE: Expensive (RM231 for 11 dishes and 1 dessert, after a RM50 discount).

AMBIENCE: Elegant, zen-like and cozy.

SERVICE: Good - food arrived promptly and the waiters were polite.

FOOD: Above average, and we highly recommend the premium eel.
